European natural gas storage levels
1 Gas Storage in Europe Adding security through flexibility This paper outlines the EFET position on the role of Commercial storage facilities in Europe. It presents the current situation regarding access to storage and how Commercial storage can contribute to the proper functioning of the European gas market. Working gas in storage was 2,043 Bcf as of Friday, March 6, 2020, according to EIA estimates. This represents a net decrease of 48 Bcf from the previous week. Stocks were 796 Bcf higher than last year at this time and 227 Bcf above the five-year average of 1,816 Bcf. LNG also became an integral part of the natural gas source mix, growing by nearly 19% over the last two years. In 2018, almost 50 bcm of gas was withdrawn from LNG storage and entered the European pipeline system, compared to 47.4 bcm and 41.9 bcm in 2017 and 2016, respectively. gas use in the power sector continued to grow, this was more than offset by the lower gas demand for space heating as a consequence of seasonally high temperatures. In 2017 as a whole, driven by growing gas-fired generation, EU gas demand increased by 6% to 491 bcm, reaching the highest level since 2010. The strong supply growth that enabled natural gas inventories to build more than average during the April-October injection season forced prices down during 2019 and is expected to limit them to an average $2.52/MMBtu in 2020, according to the Energy Information Administration.

European LNG imports are at record levels this year. Europe’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have been steadily increasing since October 2018, and reached a new monthly record of 12.7 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in November 2019, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates based on Bloomberg Finance L.P. tanker shipment data. Natural gas is a commodity that can be stored for an indefinite period of time in natural gas This is why the regulatory body monitors storage inventory levels. As of January 2011, there are 124 underground storage facilities in Europe. The daily price fell to below $2/MBtu in late 2015 for the first time since 2012; whereas production and gas storage levels reached record levels and the
