In 2019, about half of Alberta's light synthetic crude oil (upgraded bitumen) was exported to the US. In contrast almost 95% of the province's heavy diluted bitumen is sold to US refineries. As heavy oil production from the oil sands continues to increase through the next decade, volumes of heavy oil exports to the US are also expected to rise.
